Mystic Experience

By Jim Cassa

The word mystical means that knowledge of reality is attainable by direct revelation, by insight, without the use of the five senses. Mystical experiences are more common the we think. Many people keep these experiences to themselves and with good reason.

What people do not understand is often ridiculed. Making your mystical experiences known when working a traditional job has some risk. Do not despair, my dear reader, I work from home and do not have a boss, and I have a certain freedom from fear of losing my job since I work for myself.

Mystical experiences have been recorded over the centuries from ancient Egypt up until the present. A good compilation of a modern view on mystic experience is the VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE by William James. Ecstatic visions, seeing angels, visiting other dimensions have been fascinating the public for years.

Years ago I met a man who lived for some time in an ashram in the Far East. He told me of his deep meditation practices, living the dharma, ecstatic trance states, and the spiritual philosophy he followed with determination. His stories about studying under a great guru fired my imagination and desire to search for something out of the ordinary. Many of his tales of his travels and adventures in the Far East seem too fascinating, more like a fiction novel, than true life experience.

One tale involved a fakir, well versed in hypnotism, who understood the hypnotic art in all its application. Hypnotism is the art of getting someone to take on suggestions directly from the operator. It is a technique that bypasses the conscious mind entirely, and lodging itself into the subconscious part, becomes part of the person so that they act according to the suggestions given.

In this case a group of farmers in the village, during a yearly feast, pestered the fakir for a display of hypnotic powers. He politely declined stating that hypnotism is not something to play around with and should be left alone. The villagers could not take a hint and pestered the fakir some more, further and further they edged him on, for a hypnotic show.

The next thing the villagers knew, all they remember, is standing around the banquet table, of the festive event, each one of them holding a kitchen knife to their throat. Not a soul remembered how they had arrived in this predicament. The fakir angrily exploded, “There is your hypnotic show, now DO NOT ASK ME AGAIN!”

Yet another story, by the man who lived in the Far East, involved his own mystical experience of meeting a Goddess while in a trance. He explained the meditation practice where he set up a candle on a table and concentrated on the flame. He eventually was able to get into a trance state. In this trance state, so he claims, he mat an Angelic Goddess who explained to him mystical insights. I told him God was male and he just looked at me and laughed.

Now after having been with me for this long dear reader, I feel obligated to tell you about my real life mystical experience. The scene is in a modern city. It could be anywhere in the Western world, and it happened to be in my study, of which I am very fond. The room is well organized, clean and large, with my favorite computer on its own table and a large bookshelf full of magazines, my written articles, and plenty of books. Each time I enter my study I feel very relaxed and comfortable. Now enough narration of other mystics, my own mystic experience went something like this…

While standing up in my study I was involved in what some might call a mystical experience.

Standing tall in this upright position all of a sudden my head began to feel giddy, almost to the point of losing consciousness, my entire body began to swoon, so much so I grabbed the wall for support. What felt like fire, well it as very hot, shot up my spine, from my tailbone to the crown of my head. Never before in my life did I encounter such a thing.

I had a massive thirst, my watch being near the water bottle that I constantly keep with me, and enough awareness to notice some surroundings. The whole incident took around ten minutes. I got scared of the new bodily sensations. It was very intense.

What happened next I did not expect at all. My hands became very hot, not unpleasantly so, but much hotter than the rest of my body. I lifted my left hand to my face and the heat emitted from my hand made my cheek warm, then hot, then boiling hot. I retracted my hand in amazement. To this very day I have hot hands. Since then I have studied Reiki and other arts.
