Oxygen molecules steal from one another. An atom or a group of atoms with an unpaired electron will steal an electron from a molecule that is close by in order to stabilize itself. Atoms such as the above mentioned are called free radicals. These high energy particles actually ricochet and damage other cells. Furthermore, they are responsible for the accelerated growth rate of age related diseases. To be more specific, wrinkles are the end result of the wild ricocheting action of free radicals. Loading up on antioxidants will fight against the aging process and the susceptibility towards diseases. Zinc, vitamins A, C, E, and selenium are at the top of the list and are the most effective antioxidants. They will cut down on the amount of free radicals produced by skin cells.

Fortunately, foods high in antioxidants and pleasant to the taste, such as nuts, beans, whole grain bread, vegetables, sea food, cereals and olive oil can be found in most grocery stores. On the other hand, processed food filled with sugar, red meat and butter also taste good but should be avoided or eaten in small amounts.
Selenium, another powerful element that acts as an antioxidant is a component of certain enzymes. Its function is similar to that of vitamin E. Vitamin E will reduce wrinkles while prolonging life. It slows down the process of oxidation destruction in membranes. Even more important, vitamin E maintains healthy eyes, immune system and skin. Eating foods high in anti-oxidants may prolong life through maintaining good health. However, it is important not to soak up an abundance of sun rays. The sun will deplete a body’s supply of vitamin A, the source of vitamin which is essential for sight.
