Eclipse of the Heart

By Claire Vorster

‘He didn’t have a fantastic group of people sorrowing on His behalf, but the frame of nature itself solemnized the death of its author, heaven and earth were mourners, the sun was clad in black and if the inhabitants of the earth were unmoved, the earth itself trembled under the awful load. He came not as the subject of death, but as the conqueror and invader of its territory and He rose victorious.’ John MacArthur, Offending Christ

An eclipse occurs when one object gets in between you and another object and blocks your view. From Earth, we routinely experience two kinds of eclipses: an eclipse of the Moon and an eclipse of the Sun. During a total eclipse, the Moon completely covers our view of the Sun. As the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, the Moon begins to block out some of the Sun’s light casting a shadow on the Earth. The sky begins to darken.

So what has this to do with us? Sometimes we lose sight of Heaven because Earth gets in the way. We cannot see God in our circumstances. Now He doesn’t move, He doesn’t bail out, His love is sure and He is always with us, so what happens? Something, or quite often someone, gets in the way. It may be a through a prolonged period of suffering, injustice, rejection, loneliness or abuse. You will have your own story. In the words of the 70s power ballad you can end up with a ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. You feel numb, cold, dead inside. So what’s the answer?

In the Total Eclipse song, Bonnie Tyler is pouring out her heart as if no one is listening but there is a quiet voice behind her saying ‘turn around’. It sometimes takes a momentous effort of the will, sometimes you can only ask God to help you to do it but the answer is to turn around. On Earth as it is in Heaven…forgive or ask the Lord to help you forgive, pray for those who make your life difficult, be kind even when people aren’t. More importantly, know that whatever your obstacles, problems or experience, He is there. He had His own darkest hour and Heaven bore witness to it. Heaven is still there even when the Earth gets in the way. Closer than your every heartbeat.
