Who Will Crash Out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa?

By Rob Sheeps

The world cup games begin in earnest on June 11 2010 in South Africa but who will be on the plane home after the group stages. Here are shock early contenders for the plane ride home.

Unfortunately in Group A France have a easy set of games against Mexico, South Africa and Uruguay so will not be heading home as quickly as they should have.

In Group B, I would assume as former European Champions Greece came as second seeds in this group. If that is the case, then they would be a likely candidate for an early departure home. Nigeria and South Korea are strong teams who will both hope to get second place behind Argentina.

In Group C, it looks like England and USA will fight for the top 2 spots.

Group D looks interesting. Here we have 4 strong teams. Germany, as former World Cup holders will expect to top the group, leaving Ghana, Australia and Serbia fighting it out for second place. Between the three Australia would expect to progress, but Ghana could well topple them.

In Group E we have Cameroon, Denmark, Netherlands and Japan. Netherlands would expect to go through leaving a fight between the other three teams. This is too close to call. Any one of them could be disappointed. Cameroon will be my bet to clinch second spot.

World Champions Italy have a very easy group F. Paraguay will expect to clinch second place.

Group G is the group of death. Either Portugal or Ivory Coast will be heading home. My bet would be on Portugal crashing out. Having drawn 0 – 0 against the might of Cape Verde Islands a couple of weeks back, it looks like a possibility that they will be the shocks of the tournament.

Finally in Group H Spain will win the group in a canter. And the race for second place will be between Switzerland and Chile.
